I’m a 30-something freelance writer who quit my day job as a chemist and now earn six figures writing from the comfort of my own home. And since that amazing day, I have never looked back!
I now coach thousands of aspiring freelance writers on how to earn enough money to supplement their income and eventually replace their day jobs with their freelance writing income. My membership programs and products are enjoyed my hundreds of freelance writers across the globe. I LOVE my community of writers!
I never thought I could get to the place I am today…
As a young girl, I never had aspirations to work for myself. I mean, I was never one of those people who woke up one day and said, “I am going to be an entrepreneur!” In fact, I never even thought about freelance writing until later in my life. I never majored in writing or had aspirations to become a writer.
I went to college for Biology/Chemistry as I wanted to become a doctor. Three days of volunteering in the emergency room and seeing more blood than I wanted to and I realized that job wasn’t for me!
So with a Biochemistry degree, I got a job out of school as a lab tech and eventually worked my way up to becoming a Chemist. I was 26 and thought my $35K job was amazing and I was ready to keep expanding. My salary grew at the normal 3% rate per year and eventually I was promoted to Lead Chemist with a salary of $65K… but I soon became depressed. I realized I had worked so hard only to find myself taking scheduled 10-minute breaks and 45 minutes for lunch. I had no freedom over my schedule and had to clock in at the same time every morning and stay until my work was done every night. The same thing, day in and day out. My life was controlled by my managers and I hated it! I felt like I was in jail!
Now this 9-to-5 lifestyle may be okay for some people, but it felt too confining for me.
Fast forward a few years and my husband and I decided to move to California from New York. The stress of my job and the stress of the move put me into an early-life crisis!
After a stressful and scary panic attack at work, I knew I needed to leave that lifestyle. Once I got to California, I refused to look for another job in chemistry, so I had to think of something fast to bring some money in. Los Angeles is not exactly the cheapest place to live! I was also dealing with some health issues that made me unable to return to work. I needed a solution and stat!
So, I researched online and I learned how to create websites and do internet marketing. I started doing that but it wasn’t panning out to the earnings I needed at the time.
Then, I found a website that hired freelance writers. I remembered getting accolades in college from my English teacher about my writing so I thought I would try. I had no experience and no resume, but I was desperate.
Lo and behold, I got my first paycheck. It wasn’t much but it was something! I worked and worked and eventually I was earning $1 – 2K a month and feeling good!
Over time, through learning and by experience, I managed to work my way up to six figures a year. It’s been amazing at times and difficult at times. But, if you ask me if I would I ever take back my 9-to-5 job, I would say, “No way!”
Is my life perfect all the time? Nope.
Do I get tired and frustrated? Yup.
Do I love my life, though, because I get to call the shots and work on my own time? You betcha!!
I often get asked how I became so confident. And, my answer always is, I wasn’t! In fact, I was probably less confident than every person reading this article. As a child, I was very shy and couldn’t even look people in the eyes. It got a little better when I started growing up but I was always the introverted type and one to shy away from anything that would put myself out there to be judged. I had ZERO confidence!
To what do I attribute my success?
You DON’T need confidence to start working as a freelance writer! Trust me, you don’t! You just need courage to take that first step.
Every step you take is its own destination. – Maggie Linders
What is that first step? It depends on where you are in your journey, whether brand new or you already have some experience. Either way, every step you take will help you build confidence.
Think of it as a journey and stop looking at the destination as some far-off goal that is way in the future. Every step you take is its own destination.
